West Macedonia: Greece’s Year-Round Escape
ATHENS, September 25, 2026 — Greece is looking beyond its traditional sun-and-sea tourism model as it promotes West Macedonia as a year-round mountain destination, targeting travelers with experiences across all four seasons.
According to Greek Travel Pages (GTP), the West Macedonia region is building on its mountain tourism assets—including the Vasilitsa, Vitsi and Vigla Pisoderi ski centers—to attract visitors beyond the winter season. Government measures now allow ski centers to develop facilities and activities for year-round tourism.
The region is also promoting its forests, lakes, traditional villages, vineyards, gastronomy and cultural heritage as part of a broader destination strategy. Greece’s tourism authorities are supporting the approach through a “Sustainable Mountain Tourism Destination” framework designed to encourage low-impact tourism and accommodation in mountain areas.
West Macedonia’s new tourism identity, “A place to return to. Always,” is designed to position the region as a destination worth visiting throughout the year rather than only during the winter ski season.
The strategy reflects a wider effort by Greece to diversify its tourism offering, spread visitor demand across seasons and channel tourism activity toward lesser-known destinations.
